Risks of Social MEdia Marketing 

The main argument against using social media to market a business would be the many risks that would be presented. According to Eric Berkowitz, VP of Solutions Engineering at Tracx, a brand’s “Reputation is often defined by the way you engage in public environments” (Belbey). One human error online, such as offending the audience, can harmfully effect business and hurt a reputation. When a company posts on social media, there is a high risk that someone in their audience could be hypersensitive to a post, and this can add negativity to a brand’s image. One could also argue that legal implications is a major risk because “What you do on social media will be around permanently in some form or fashion, and an ad you released a year ago may be pulled up to be used as evidence in some type of litigation” (Robinson “Risks”). Hackers can also hack a company’s social media site and take valuable information that can cause havoc. Information such as phone numbers, emails, names and addresses can be leaked.  This not only can give the company a bad name, but also put them at risk for multiple lawsuits. However, the risks are worth it. More than ever, people are constantly looking online for deals and information on a product, and the Internet is the fastest way for people to find this. Additionally, “80% of respondents use the Internet to research information on a product or service they want to buy, and increasingly, that’s on social media networks” (Dawson). Companies can limit the risks of marketing on social media if they understand their audience, comprehend the law and take measures to prevent a security breach.
